The spirit of empathy and of social service and volunteerism is very much alive in India, said Governor. Dr. S.C. Jamir, inaugurating Swachhata Hi Sewa’ campaign at Raj Bhavan.

The campaign, an initiative of the Ministry of Drinking water and Sanitation is another endeavour to realize mission of Swachh Bharat or Clean India by achieving complete cleanliness and eliminating the practice of open defecation forever. This campaign aims at intensifying and creating an environment of cleanliness across the country in the spirit of a “Jan Andolan” (Mass Movement), said Governor.

As part of the campaign, the Government is building toilets or helping build toilets but it is for each of us to mobilize people on using those toilets and making India open-defecation free. It is heartening that many organizations are now actively engaged in sanitation and hygiene and new networks and initiatives have started. Media is also contributing to improved sanitation. This is an exciting time to be working on cleanliness observed Governor.

Governor advised young volunteers to lead to lead the Clean India Campaign in society, community, schools or colleges to see cleanliness prevails in surrounding areas and make this drive a successful campaign.

Padmashree Dr. G.C. Mitra spoke on cleanliness in everyday life terming it as an important component of civilization. Principal Secretary to Governor C.J. Venugopal delivered inaugural address. Vice-Chancellors of OUAT, Utkal University of Culture and Ramadevi Women’s University,volunteers of NCC, Scouts and guides, St. John Ambulance, Red Cross and students participated in the launching ceremony.
